Tragedy, among other things, can often trap us into a feeling of disappointment. This President didn’t let tragedy do that to him. In fact, tragedy only inspired him. Lessons from the Bible tell us we need to listen to God, especially in letting Him use us.

“And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.” Genesis 5:31 KJV
Imagine the shock on John’s face when he saw the dead man’s face was none other than that of his own father. The Bible doesn’t say a lot about Lamech. Those were the good old days before safety people ruined the fun for all us kids.
“Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.” Exodus 17:6 KJV
This President, when he was a young lad, had a very terrible temper. You might say he didn’t respond very well to stressful situations. There was also a group of very whiny, under appreciative walkers in the Bible who seemed to do the same thing over and over again, too. Walking may be a real good all-around exercise.
“Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.” I Corinthians 9:24 KJV
The legend has fallen! There was one very important trophy missing from his family heritage mantel: the Presidency. “I always said I would leave this stinking job if something better came along and now it has,” he said.
“I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.” Psalms 116:1
I must confess, even to this day, if I sing at all, it’s only in a slight whisper. With a tear in his eyes, he pulled his grandson close to him and kissed him on the forehead. He wanted to witness the twinkle in the child’s eyes because of his presence.
It was a long, lonely night in the motel room. Everything I worked for seemed to be falling apart. “I have never been a quitter,” he said. Lucky for us, our God is a God of second chances.
